An contracted laborer is someone, usually living on Mannon, usually from Tanatha, who signs a contract to work for an agreed upon amount of time, performing mutually acceptable duties, in order to "pay" for transport to another planet for the purpose of eventually settling there, or in order to learn a trade (as is the case for many Tanatha) or simply gain worldly experience. Interplanetary travel costs were and continue to be prohibitive, so for many people this is the only way to be able to afford travel to the Local Cluster. Even for those only seeking education or experience, these contracts can be abused leaving the laborer with little legal recourse regarding their own freedom and fate. Contract laborers are often viewed as "second class citizens", pitied or despised.
